Hormone Replacement Therapy

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) supplements the body’s falling oestrogen and progesterone levels during and after menopause. As ovarian output declines, women may experience hot flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, disturbed sleep, and mood shifts. HRT addresses these symptoms by restoring hormonal balance, and in some cases it also helps protect bone density over the longer term.

Key points

  • Menopause brought on early, whether by ovary-removal surgery or early ovarian failure, is also a recognised reason for this therapy.
  • How long treatment continues varies widely, with some women needing only brief support and others continuing for years.
  • Before suggesting a regimen, a doctor typically weighs factors such as heart health and any family history of cancers sensitive to hormones.

Who benefits from HRT

Women going through natural menopause, surgical menopause (following oophorectomy), or premature ovarian insufficiency are the main candidates. Symptoms vary widely; some women need only short-term support, while others choose longer courses. A doctor can assess personal risk factors, including cardiovascular history and family history of hormone-sensitive cancers, before recommending a regimen.
